Training apparently needed to wait until we had lunch on the quad.

I couldn’t really fault the guys. It was a bright, sunny day, not too hot, and the quad was a wide, grassy area intersected by cute cobblestone pathways. Charming wooden gazebos dotted the space at regular intervals—so many of them, there was no way you could claim primacy of place simply by sitting in the shade. For that matter, there were dozens of carefully manicured trees around the quad, making it easy for students to set up an impromptu picnic and live large from the ground up. So the fact that Connor and I were joining the other guys in the southwest corner of the quad wasn’t, in and of itself, all that interesting.

Except for, you know, all the interest we were attracting.

“What’s going on?” I muttered as Connor tightened his hold on my hand, as if he somehow knew I was about to bolt.

“You’re the new kid in school,” he dismissed as another wave of spectators glanced our way, then went back to whispering among themselves. “And, when Luke and Rafe show up anywhere together, people start to pay attention, because it generally means we’ll all be there.”

“You guys are the popular kids?”

“More and more,” he said, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. I tried not to feel self-conscious as we walked across campus, but that proved virtually impossible. As much as it felt right to be with Connor, I seriously missed the anonymity of my former life.

There was lunch already waiting for us when we arrived, sandwiches from the caf. I was still new enough to this concept that my mouth watered as I caught sight of the food. So much food! And it seemed to be everywhere on this campus. It was totally insane.

“Eat,” Luke said, gesturing to the pile, and I fought the blush. While Connor seemed to know my emotions through and through, Luke focused on the basics. The guy always knew when I was hungry—which, granted, seemed to be all the time these days. I’d begun to round out some of my hollows and soften some of my angles since I’d started at Twyst. I needed to watch it or I’d become the Stay Puft Marshmallow Mage.

But not today. I picked up something that looked like it was stuffed with chicken, cheese, pesto sauce, and tomatoes, and managed not to weep as I bit into it.

The guys dove onto the food next, and it was only then that I realized they’d been waiting for me to get started. Probably because they went through the food like a wasting fire. By the time I finished my first sandwich, two-thirds of the feast was gone. I snagged a second sandwich and set it aside, still not able to convince myself that I didn’t need to sneak food anymore.

“We need to work out a training plan,” Rafe began crisply.

Marcus held up his hand, the wind lifting his pale blond hair. He
